Getting started
Posting a volunteer opportunity takes four things, in this order: an account, an organization, our approval of that organization, and the opportunity itself. The first three are once only.
1. Create your account
- Go to sign up and enter your email address and a password.
- Check your email and click the verification link. The account does not work until you do.
Use an address you actually read. Everything about your organization, from the approval decision to a volunteer signing up, arrives there.
2. Register your organization
An account is a person. An organization is what volunteers find, and what opportunities belong to. Registering one is a four step form covering who you are, where you are, and what you do.
Register an organization , or read what the four steps ask for first.
3. Wait for approval
New organizations arrive as pending and a person at Kanu Hawaii reviews them. While you wait you can keep editing your profile and you can write opportunities, they simply are not public yet. Once you are approved, your organization is visible to volunteers and anything you have published goes live with it.
4. Post your first opportunity
- Open your organization dashboard and go to the Needs tab.
- Choose to add a need.
- Fill in a title, a description, a contact email, and at least one island. Everything else is optional.
- Set the status to Published and save.
The form has more in it than those four fields, and the rest is worth a pass: what each section does.
5. Confirm who turned up
After the day, mark attendance on the Volunteers tab. This is the step people forget, and skipping it means the hours your volunteers earned are never credited and your reports read as zero. See attendance and reports.
Working with other people
You do not have to run your organization alone. The Members tab invites colleagues by email, as an editor who can post and manage opportunities or a viewer who can only read. See invite your team.
