For volunteersYour account

Your account

You can find opportunities and sign up for most of them without an account. An account is what keeps a record: your hours, your signups, the things you saved, and what you told us you are interested in.

Creating one

The Join button in the header opens needs.kanuhawaii.org/join , a four step form:

Account

Email, password, and the password again.

Profile

Your name, and optionally a photo, a short bio, a phone number, and a ZIP code.

Interests

Islands, causes, and activity types you care about. All optional, all changeable later.

Finish

There is a shorter version at /signup  that asks for the email and password alone. Either way the screen tells you to check your email and verify the account, and you can sign in once you have.

The two ways to sign in

The sign-in page offers both as tabs:

  • Email & Password. What you set when you signed up. Forgot password? on the same tab sends a reset link.
  • Magic Link. Enter your email, we send a link, and opening it signs you in. Nothing to remember. The link expires, so request a fresh one rather than reusing an old email.

Both land you in the same account. Use whichever you prefer.

Signups you made as a guest

If you signed up for something as a guest and later create an account with that same email address, those signups move onto your account by themselves and appear under My RSVPs. You do not have to do anything, and you do not have to sign up again.

The one exception is a duplicate: if you are already signed in and have signed up for the same opportunity on the same date, the guest row is left alone rather than making two.

The same thing happens for organizations. If your organization was carried over from the old Kanu Hawaii website, it may already be listed, and signing up with the contact email on that listing makes you its owner automatically. Check organizations  for your own name before registering a second one.

The five tabs on your profile

needs.kanuhawaii.org/profile :

TabWhat it holds
My RSVPsEverything you have signed up for, with Cancel RSVP on each.
My HoursYour total, every credited shift, and anything awaiting approval. See your hours.
Saved NeedsOpportunities you saved while browsing.
My InterestsIslands, causes, and activity types, as chips you tick.
Email PreferencesWhat we are allowed to send you.

Above the tabs, an Edit Profile section holds your name, bio, phone, and ZIP code.

Email preferences

Four switches, each of which turns something off:

PreferenceCovers
All emailsReminders and thank-yous. Overrides the rows below.
Event remindersThe reminder before an opportunity you signed up for.
Post-event thank-yousThe message after one you attended.
Organization mailing listsMail from organizations you volunteered with.

Organizations you have opted into individually get their own row, so you can leave one mailing list without leaving the rest.

Signup receipts and account emails are not on this list. Every email we send is.

Using these is better for both of us than marking mail as spam: a spam complaint affects delivery for every other volunteer, and unsubscribing here does exactly what you wanted.
